3 Transfer Portal targets Jon Scheyer and Duke must be aggressive in landing

The extent to which Jon Scheyer will need to be aggressive in the Transfer Portal will fully depend on what happens in the coming weeks with his current roster.

Maliq Brown is out of eligibility, and Cameron Boozer will undoubtedly declare for the NBA Draft, but there are a number of variables after that.

Patrick Ngongba, Isaiah Evans, and Dame Sarr are all facing NBA Draft questions with no obvious answer. All three could leave, or maybe Scheyer is able to convince one or two from that trio to return to Durham next season.

Ngongba seems likely to go. Evans is probably on the fence. Sarr would be wise to return.

There's also the possibility that Duke could lose some to the portal, too. Guys like Darren Harris, Sebastian Wilkins, and maybe even Cayden Boozer could seek out bigger roles and opportunities elsewhere.

More clarification is coming, but next season's roster can be described as fluid right now. But there are some major targets out there who have already announced their intentions to enter the Transfer Portal that Scheyer should aggressively pursue, regardless of who stays and goes on the current roster.

These 3 Transfer Portal targets would be perfect fits for Jon Scheyer and Duke

3. Miles Byrd, San Diego State, Wing

One of the top defensive players in the portal, San Diego State's Miles Byrd, would be an intriguing addition for the Blue Devils, especially if Dame Sarr decides to move on.

Byrd is one of the top defensive players in the country, winning the Mountain West's Defensive Player of the Year this season. Duke has been elite on defense the last two seasons, and Byrd would be the kind of addition who ensures that doesn't change even if the Blue Devils lose Sarr and Evans on the wing.

Even if both come back, Byrd would be an excellent complementary piece, and could potentially log minutes at the four. Losing Maliq Brown, the ACC's Defensive Player of the Year, is a tough loss, but Byrd would be an easy plug-and-play replacement.

He only shot 30% from three this year, but he does enough otherwise that it's of little consequence to his value.

Busting Brackets currently has Byrd as the No. 14 player in their Transfer Portal rankings.

2. Drew Fielder, Boise State, PF/C

Duke is going to need to add some size in the portal after losing Brown and the likely loss of Patrick Ngongba. Size on the interior was a problem down the stretch when Ngongba went down, and even with the high school adds of Cameron Williams and Maxime Meyer, Scheyer will want to add a proven big body or two in the portal.

Boise State's Drew Fielder, ranked No. 20 in the Busting Brackets portal rankings, is one of the most intriguing bigs available.

Fielder's ability to shoot from distance could make him an outstanding addition next to Williams in Duke's frontcourt next season. He averaged 15 and 6 for Boise State as a junior in just under 24 minutes a night, connecting on 54.7% from the floor and 40.9% from three on nearly three attempts per game.

Fielder began his career at Georgetown before transferring to Boise State and enjoyed a breakout season with the Broncos that will lead him to another high-major opportunity.

1. Somto Cyril, Georgia, C

If Ngongba is leaning towards the NBA Draft, then Scheyer needs to pull out all the stops to try and land Somto Cyril, the Georgia transfer big man. He was the SEC's leading shot blocker, averaging 2.2 blocks per game in just 21 minutes of action.

He's a terrific athlete and rim-runner, and would be a dream pairing with incoming freshman point guard Deron Rippey Jr., who can break down defenses and get to the paint, setting Cyril up with a ton of lob opportunities for easy dunks.

Cyril will be one of the most sought-after players in the Transfer Portal. He's ranked No. 2 overall right now, per Busting Brackets.

Cyril is a former Kentucky commit under John Calipari, and Arkansas will undoubtedly make a major push for him. Scheyer will have his work cut out for him to try and lure him to Durham, but the effort would be well worth it.
