Dame Sarr's NBA Draft decision: Should he stay at Duke or go pro?

The pending stay or go decision for Duke freshman Dame Sarr will have major implications for the Blue Devils.

Perhaps it seems silly on the surface to ponder the NBA Draft status of a freshman wing who averaged just 6.4 points per game on 40/32/53 shooting splits, but Dame Sarr is a unique case, and the NBA drafts more on projections than production.

And Sarr's projected growth is that of a 3-and-D wing with special length that you cannot teach. He's all of 6-foot-8 with a big wingspan, and he's already an elite defender. His NBA projections are purely based on his ability to improve as a three-point shooter, which seems likely.

Sarr knocked down 13-of-29 (44.8%) across 27 games with Barcelona last year before coming to Durham.

His on-and-off-ball defense is special, though, and he was one of the most important players on one of the best defenses in college basketball this season. Sarr was the constant in all of Duke's best defensive lineups.

Sarr's return would be a huge boost for the Blue Devils next season, but that's far from guaranteed.

Dame Sarr is a projected 2nd Round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft

Sarr ranks 50th overall on ESPN's big board. That puts him in line for a late second-round draft choice, which would point toward him being smart to come back to college for his sophomore season.

But it depends on whether Sarr wants to bet on himself. He's the type of player who will test extremely well at the combine with his size and athletic profile, and he could do himself considerable favors by declaring and going through the process.

This is a deep and talented draft class, however, and Sarr would probably be smart to play one more season of college basketball. If he can get the three-point shooting up closer to the 40% range, he'd have a real chance to be a first-round pick in the 2027 draft class.

With the addition of 5-star PG Deron Rippey and his ability to beat defenders off the bounce, Sarr should get a ton of open looks from the corner, which would give him the best chance for a shooting uptick.
