Expected Duke basketball co-captain next season: Joey Baker

Excluding fifth-year grad transfers Theo John and Bates Jones, Joey Baker is the lone Duke basketball senior on tap for the 2021-22 campaign. Again, though, that alone isn’t reason enough for the 6-foot-6, 205-pound small forward to be a captain.

Baker is now deserving nonetheless.

Ever since reclassifying to join Zion Williamson & Friends as Blue Devils in 2018-19, the Fayetteville native has exemplified sticktoitiveness and extreme loyalty (see the years of transfer chatter that has turned out false). With his sights on April nets, Baker should now be a pivotal contributor, even if he’s a reserve.

Mike Krzyzewski described the 20-year-old perfectly:

“He’s enthusiastic about the accomplishments of his teammates. On and off the court, he’s a guy you can depend on, someone who would be a true friend — that’s Joey Baker.”

A captain? Must be.
