Any Duke basketball followers who enjoyed watching Vernon Carey Jr. dominate in the post for the Blue Devils last season — to the tune of becoming the program’s seventh ACC Rookie of the Year since 2012 — would surely welcome the idea of his bruiser of a younger brother joining #TheBrotherhood.
After all, as Jake Perper of Prep Hoops noted during the freshman campaign of NSA University School (Fla.) big man Jaylen Carey, his game instantly brings to mind that of the Duke one-and-done who now looks to hear his name either in the first round or early on in the second round at the 2020 NBA Draft:
“When watching Jaylen Carey, you can see glimpses of what Vernon Carey Jr. has become…He is a big body who has nimble feet and is able to mix it up down low because of his size and power. His jumping ability will be the focus moving forward.”
The following brief mixtape does seem to support Perper’s take:
Granted, there’s no word that the Blue Devils are eyeing Jaylen Carey, whose dad, Vernon Carey Sr., lasted eight years as a starter for the Miami Dolphins as a 6-foot-5, 340-pound offensive lineman. And other than the fact that the youngest Carey attended some games with his family while his brother was at Duke, there’s no direct evidence he would want to follow the same path.
But assuming Jaylen Carey chisels out his frame and further develops his post moves, one would imagine Mike Krzyzewski and his gang will eventually come calling.
