Keeping up with who is and who isn't eligible in college basketball is nearly impossible nowadays. After the blanket ruling by a Colorado judge granting eligibility to all departing seniors from the class of 2022, chaos has reigned across the country, with numerous players who were thought to be out of eligibility gaining a potential extra year.
That has been to the detriment of coaches like Jon Scheyer, who built his roster the right way. Other contenders are bolstering their teams with experienced players, making Duke's path to the National Championship all the more treacherous.
One of those players potentially taking advantage of the extra year is a familiar foe for the Blue Devils: former UNC guard Seth Trimble.
And one of the teams trying to lure Trimble is arguably Duke's biggest competition in the ACC for next season.
Louisville is among the teams pushing for former UNC guard Seth Trimble
Louisville has reportedly shown interest in Trimble. While it's funny to see UNC fans upset over it, it's hard to enjoy it when he could further bolster Pat Kelsey's roster.
Louisville already looks like a problem next season after some impressive Transfer Portal additions. The Cardinals opened their checkbook and bought a competitive roster, landing transfers Jackson Shelstad (Oregon), Karter Knox (Arkansas), Alvaro Folgueiras (Iowa), and Flory Bidunga (Kansas).
Adding Trimble would solidify their backcourt even more. The former Tar Heel averaged 14 points and three assists per game last season. You can never have enough veteran guards, particularly in March, and Trimble would be a major addition to Kelsey's team.
Trimble is forever a Duke villain after hitting the game-winning three-pointer last season to knock off the Blue Devils in Chapel Hill. It was the only ACC loss of the season for the Blue Devils and prevented Scheyer and company from a second straight season sweep of their bitter rivals. Transferring to Louisville and continuing to be a thorn in Duke's side would further hammer home his villainy.
Trimble has yet to confirm whether he's going to pursue a fifth season of college basketball. After going undrafted in June, Trimble signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Washington Wizards and played for them in the Summer League.
Despite a couple of impressive performances, Trimble hasn't gotten the NBA attention he hoped for, which could lead him back to college. A great system we have now, huh folks?
Trimble transferring to Louisville wouldn't change the hierarchy at the top of the ACC on its own. Duke would still be the significant favorite to win the league for a third year in a row. But the ACC continues getting better, with teams making big investments to try to catch Scheyer's Blue Devils.
This move would take Louisville one step closer, if still a few steps behind.
