1995 Hall of Fame Bowl: Another disappointment
Barry Wilson never ended up having success at Duke, but his predecessor Fred Goldsmith did. In his first season, he led the Blue Devils to an 8-4 record and an appearance in the 1995 Hall of Fame Bowl.
The Blue Devils lost to Barry Alvarez and the unranked Wisconsin Badgers, 34-20, after entering the game ranked No. 25 in the AP Poll.
The Badgers opened the scoring with a pick-six and ended the first quarter up 13-0. Robert Baldwin answered with a touchdown for Duke in the second quarter to cut the score to 13-7, and a field goal made it 13-10 at the half.
In the third, Duke tied the game with another field goal before Wisconsin pulled away. Terrell Fletcher, Wisconsin’s running back, scored two second-half touchdowns and led a rushing attack that racked up 278 yards in the victory.
