1958 Orange Bowl: Too many mistakes in Miami

Duke did not win the ACC in 1957, but the Blue Devils did finish second behind North Carolina State with a record of 6-2-2. With NC State on probation, the Blue Devils got the invite to Miami. The Blue Devils outgained the 9-1 Oklahoma Sooners 328-279 but still lost 48-21 because of five turnovers and a blocked punt.

The Blue Devils began the game by giving up a 94-yard pick-six that made it 7-0 Sooners. Then after the game was already out of hand, George Harris threw another pick-six to seal the game for Oklahoma. Duke finished the year 6-3-2.

This was Oklahoma’s third Orange Bowl win in five seasons and they would return to win it again in 1959. Duke has still not returned to the Orange Bowl.
