1955 Orange Bowl: Bill Murray’s big win
Following Wallace Wade’s tenure, Bill Murray assumed control of the program in 1951 and quickly built a winner. He even led Duke to an ACC title in the 1954 season that culminated with a 34-7 win over Nebraska in the 1955 Orange Bowl. Murray’s team finished the year ranked 14th in the AP Poll with a record of 8-2-1.
This win came 10 years to the day after the program’s first bowl game victory in the 1945 Sugar Bowl. It was a scoreless first quarter between the Blue Devils and Cornhuskers in Miami, but Duke went into the half with a 14-0 lead and didn’t look back.
Nebraska scored the first touchdown of the second half to pull within seven, but that was the closest it would come. Duke scored the next three touchdowns.
