1945 Sugar Bowl: A win without Wade

During World War II, Wallace Wade served in the US Military, so his assistant and Duke’s head basketball coach at the time, Eddie Cameron, took over the program from 1942-45. Cameron led the Blue Devils to their first-ever bowl victory with a 29-26 win over Wade’s former program, Alabama.

In four seasons leading the program, Cameron won three Southern Conference titles and amassed a record of 25-11-1. In 1945 Duke finished 6-4 and 11th in the AP Poll after its Sugar Bowl victory.

The Blue Devils trailed 26-20 in the fourth quarter, but a safety and a 20-yard touchdown run by George Clark brought them back to secure a 29-26 win.
