Duke basketball Top-10 players of the 1990s No. 9: William Avery

  • 2 seasons at Duke (1997-99)
  • Current assistant coach
  • ACC Tournament Champion (1999)

Next on the list is one of Shane Battier’s teammates, and one of the newest Duke assistant coaches, William Avery.

Avery spent two seasons with the Blue Devils and his sophomore campaign was much more prolific than his freshman season after posting just 8.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game.

As a sophomore, when the Georgia native was selected to the All-ACC Second Team, he averaged 14.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest. Duke won the ACC regular season championship in both of William Avery’s seasons and the ACC Tournament when he was a sophomore.

Avery became the No. 14 overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves and had a lengthy professional career, which was mostly spent overseas.

Recently, William Avery went back to Duke to complete his degree, and last month he was named to his first coaching role as an assistant on Jon Scheyer’s staff.
