Duke basketball: Hubert Davis blames referees after loss to Blue Devils
Hubert Davis had interesting comments after his team lost to the Duke basketball program.
Naturally, emotions are high after the Duke basketball team tangles with North Carolina but Tar Heel head coach Hubert Davis did not mince words during his press conference when asked about the game.
“The stat I’m looking at is going into [North Carolina] shot 150 more free throws than anyone in [the ACC] and we shot three [free throws against Duke],” a disgruntled Davis said.
“Zero in the second half.”
North Carolina took 27 attempts from 3-point range in the 63-57 loss to Duke and connected on just seven of those shots (25.9-percent).
“We attacked the basket,” Davis continued.
Tar Heel superstar Armando Bacot finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds on 6-of-12 shooting but did not have a shot attempt in the final 12:10 of regulation after going 1-of-4 after halftime.

“Dereck [Lively] and Ryan Young are really good defensive players and they did a really good job at not letting Armando [Bacot] get to those spots…and with us being, by far, the best in the conference at the free throw line our best guy that gets to the free throw line is Armando,” the North Carolina head coach added.
“And he got to the free throw line twice.”
However, the crying for more free throws from the Tar Heel leader seems troubling since North Carolina played most of the second half on the perimeter as 19 of its 35 shot attempts were from 3-point range.
“I’m just stating the fact that we shot 150 more free throws than anyone in the conference and tonight we shot three.”
Duke basketball freshman makes lasting impact on rivalry
Freshman center Dereck Lively also made things extremely difficult, something Hubert Davis noted, for the Tar Heels with eight blocks, one shy of a freshman program record, and 14 rebounds.
“[Dereck Lively] is a fantastic player and Duke is a fantastic defensive team,” Davis added.
“They pressure you, they do a great job with their quickness moving their feet.
North Carolina was held to its season low in points and it marked the ninth time this season Duke has held its opponent to its season low in points when playing the Blue Devils on that given date.

“Dereck [Lively] is one of the best, if not the best, even if he doesn’t block [the shot], his length and athleticism can alter [the shot].”
Hubert Davis then took a five second pause before adding, “We went to the free throw line three times. And we shoot 150 more [free throws] than any team in the conference.”
Duke will quickly turnaround and travel to Miami to face the No. 23 Hurricanes on Monday night (7:00p.m. EST, ESPN) after defeating the then No. 17 ‘Canes by two, 68-66, in Durham two weeks ago.
