The Duke basketball staff might now be the instant leader for a 2023 guard.

According to every social media account of new Duke basketball recruiting target Jared Mccain, his last name is “Mccain” — yes, with consecutive lowercase c’s — despite seemingly every recruiting site writing it as the more common “McCain” surname instead. So Ball Durham will buck the media trend by respecting how the person himself writes his name.

With that out of the way, let’s get to the related news.

On Tuesday night, Centennial (Calif.) junior Jared Mccain tweeted that he now holds a Duke basketball offer. Then early Wednesday morning, the first 247Sports Crystal Ball pick arrived in the race; it comes from Kentucky basketball recruiting insider Chris Fisher and has a “high” confidence level.

Perhaps Jon Scheyer and his crew in Durham were the first of Mccain’s 15 suitors to honor those lowercase c’s in his family name. Or maybe there’s behind-the-scenes chatter pointing to his utter appreciation of the offer; after all, the 6-foot-2, 175-pound shooting guard is now the only undecided 2023 guard boasting an offer from the Duke Blue Devils.

A scouting report on Duke basketball recruiting target Jared Mccain

Jared Mccain currently ranks No. 24 overall on the 247Sports 2023 Composite after not appearing until the site expanded its 2023 list from 75 to 150 in October. At that time, Brandon Jenkins of 247Sports alluded to the reason for the sudden appeal of the Team Why Not sensation (wearing No. 1 in the Peach Jam highlights below):

“[Mccain] is a corner specialist who can knock down open threes with regularity. He excels at playing within himself and looks to make a play without wasted motion. His winning traits were exemplified [this summer] in how he was a huge reason why his summer team won a 16U championship on the Nike circuit.”

Duke already has one 2023 commit: Oak Hill (Va.) five-star point guard Caleb Foster.

Meanwhile, the Blue Devils’ 2023 outstanding-offer sheet consists of six five-stars: Jared Mccain, small forward Mackenzie Mgbako, small forward JJ Taylor, small forward Matas Buzelis, small forward Taylor Bowen, and power forward Gregory Jackson.
