Duke basketball pledge names program’s 5 all-time best shooters
By Matt Giles
Jaden Schutt appears to appreciate several recent Duke basketball swishers.
Guys like Trajan Langdon and Bobby Hurley must forgive Yorkville Christian (Ill.) four-star senior Jaden Schutt for obvious recency bias this week when listing his top five Duke basketball shooters of all time.
After all, consider that Schutt, who ranks No. 107 overall on the 247Sports 2022 Composite and recently became the third addition to the Blue Devils’ class, wasn’t even born yet when picture-perfect sharpshooter JJ Redick debuted in Durham as a freshman in 2002-03.

Speaking of Redick, though, Schutt grew up studying VHS tapes of the Blue Devils’ all-time leading scorer. With that in mind, although the 6-foot-5, 180-pound shooting guard didn’t rank his top five during an insightful 40-minute chat with recruiting insider Jack Schumaker on the SchuZ YouTube channel, it’s no surprise that he said Redick’s name first:
And it’s no surprise that Schutt also mentioned his future head coach in Mike Krzyzewski’s successor-in-waiting, Jon Scheyer.
The following are Schutt’s five:
- JJ Redick
- Luke Kennard
- Jon Scheyer
- Gary Trent Jr.
- Grayson Allen
Plus, Schutt threw in Seth Curry’s name at the end as an honorable mention and alluded to the difficulty in coming up with only a single-digit list.
Future Duke basketball sniper hoping to join the list
Here’s what Schutt — pronounced “shoot” — told Schumaker about potentially becoming a renowned Duke shooter himself:
“Obviously, I just gotta do what I gotta do and shoot the ball really well. And I’d just say focus on winning…That’s definitely a dream, you know, to have kids come through and want to go to Duke because I went there. So it’s definitely a dream.”
The other two pieces in Scheyer’s 2022 recruiting haul thus far are five-star small forward Dariq Whitehead and five-star power forward Kyle Filipowski.
