Unlike last season, a couple of Duke basketball players emit captain vibes.

Duke basketball never publicly named 2020-21 captains. Perhaps the pandemic was to blame. Or maybe head coach Mike Krzyzewski never felt anyone exhibited captain-level leadership.

Also, Jordan Goldwire was the only fourth-year scholarship Blue Devil. Still, it was a bit surprising that not even the defensive tone-setter — now at Oklahoma after the NCAA granted all 2020-21 athletes extra eligibility — ever got the captain nod.

That said, a player’s class isn’t necessarily the deciding factor. In other words, not all seniors become captains. Conversely, as a sophomore Tre Jones proved in 2019-20 alongside senior co-captains Javin DeLaurier and Jack White, not all Duke captains are seniors.

Undoubtedly, the 2021-22 Blue Devils will look to outdo their 2020-21 counterparts, who went danceless due to a saddening 13-11 record.
