The Duke basketball program has made one last adjustment to its coaching staff.

It has been a bizarre offseason for the Duke basketball coaching staff, most notably headlined by the pending retirement of Mike Krzyzewski after the 2021-22 season and Jon Scheyer eventually filling that vacancy.

However, Nate James left Durham to become the head coach at Austin Peavy, and Nolan Smith, the former Director of Basketball Operations, was promoted to an assistant coaching role.

Duke announced another change to its staff on Tuesday afternoon as Chris Carrawell has been elevated to an associate head coach.

Carrawell, 45, will fill James’ role as an associate head coach this season and will be the only current coach in that role once Scheyer is elevated as the head coach after this upcoming season.

Chris Carrawell was a four-year player with the Blue Devils, being named as the ACC Player of the Year as well as a First Team All-American in 2000.

He was selected as the No. 41 overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs but never suited up for the Spurs as he spent his professional career overseas before turning to the coaching ranks.

Carrawell returned to Durham in 2018 after spending time with the Marquette Golden Eagles where he was an assistant coach under former Blue Devil Steve Wojciechowski.

Wojciechowski was fired from Marquette following a disappointing end to the year for the Golden Eagles and has not landed a job this offseason.

Duke basketball associate head coach to soon see expanded role

As Nate James is no longer with the Blue Devils and Mike Krzyzewski is not going out on the road to recruit anymore, Chris Carrawell will see an expanded role on the recruiting trail alongside Jon Scheyer and newly minted assistant coach Nolan Smith.
