Duke basketball: UNC disrespects retirement announcement of Coach K
North Carolina has disrespected the retirement announcement of Duke basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
On April 1 at 10:34am, the North Carolina Tar Heels official social media accounts made the retirement of head coach Roy Williams official. And by 3:04pm, the Duke basketball social media team had tweeted out a congratulatory statement from Mike Krzyzewski.
On June 2 at 6:56pm, the Blue Devils social media channels had officially posted and published the press release that the 2021-22 season would be the last for Mike Krzyzewski.
Hundreds of congratulatory messages poured in all day long from professional athletes, former Duke players, and rival coaches, which included Kentucky’s John Calipari, Kansas’ Bill Self, and former Tar Heel head coach Roy Willams.

Williams’ comments to the assembled media came at the Korn Ferry Tour, a professional golf tournament, but there has been no statement from the North Carolina men’s basketball program nor current head coach Hubert Davis.
The lack of a statement from the novice head coach shows he certainly isn’t getting off to a good start with respecting the historic rivalry the two schools have created.
There still have been no comments from the Tar Heels regarding the pending retirement of Krzyzewski as of the publication of this article at 10:42am EST on Thursday, June 3.
Why has UNC been quiet about the historic Duke basketball news?
The only tweets from the official North Carolina Men’s Basketball Twitter page on June 2 were a commitment video after Davis landed a pledge from three-star center Will Shaver and a retweet of the city of Chapel Hill proclaiming that June 2, 2021, will be known as Roy Williams Day.
Also not the best timing for that, but that’s another story for another day.

All in all, Mike Krzyzewski has done a tremendous amount for the North Carolina basketball program, as much as Tar Heel fans will not admit it, and he’s done incredible work in advancing the game of college basketball. And it’s not the best look that Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels have not publicly congratulated the Hall of Famer on his career.
Good thing Krzyzewski still has at least two more games against his arch-rival.
