A 2022 phenom who is a Duke basketball follower will soon travel to Durham.

Currently, Florida State stands as the 247Sports Crystal Ball leader in the growing battle for Montverde (Fla.) small forward Dariq Whitehead. However, the 6-foot-8, 205-pound five-star junior told Jason Jordan of SI this week that he has scheduled an official visit with the Duke basketball program for the second weekend in June.

Plus, it’s worth pointing out that the explosive 2022 prospect threw in this tidbit as well regarding five-time national champion head coach Mike Krzyzewski:

“I’m a big fan of Coach K and what he has done at Duke.”

Whitehead holds almost two dozen offers at the moment. And a majority of them are from major conferences.

Meanwhile, the Blue Devils have yet to enter the pursuit with an offer of their own. But considering Whitehead noted to Jordan that he has no immediate plans to name finalists or even think about deciding on a college destination, Krzyzewski might just be holding back an offer until the 16-year-old’s arrival on campus in a few weeks.

A scouting report on the upcoming Duke basketball recruiting visitor

Before Dariq Whitehead’s junior campaign, 247Sports director of basketball scouting Jerry Meyer offered the following assessment of his complete game:

“Solid size for a wing. Has quick-twitch athleticism. Fast with the basketball. Loves to attack the rim, but has a smooth jumper. Three-level scorer. Has a great pull-up jumper going left. Solid ball-handler and passer who plays with awareness and instincts. Rebounds his position well. Has tremendous potential as a versatile defender.”

At No. 8 overall on the 247Sports 2022 Composite, Dariq Whitehead — one of five Montverde players who averaged double-digit points last season for a squad that finished 25-1 and won the GEICO Nationals in early April — ranks higher than any of the other handful of recruits who presently appear to be squarely on the Duke basketball recruiting radar.

Still, though, there has been no report of any offers to the class from Coach K and his staff.
