Sizing up suitors in key Duke basketball recruiting race: No. 2 Milwaukee

Yes, Milwaukee head coach Pat Baldwin, who was a four-year star at point guard for Northwestern in the early 1990s, is the namesake father of Patrick Baldwin Jr.

True, with strict nationwide restrictions on recruiting due to precautions surrounding the pandemic, the elder Baldwin has enjoyed a seemingly significant advantage in the past year by being the only head coach in the race to have held in-person visits with the coveted prep. Obviously, living in the same house, these visits must occur pretty much daily.

With that in mind, it makes sense that the Panthers took the lead over the long-time frontrunner Blue Devils a few months back, at least in the eyes of 247Sports Crystal Ball. On the other hand, that lead has shrunk in the past week (more on that here in a minute).

Furthermore, many of those closely following the high-profile recruiting battle have asked the same thing: If Patrick Baldwin Jr. was serious about playing for his dad, whose first four Milwaukee squads have each finished with a losing record, wouldn’t he have already announced and tried to sway some buddies to join him?

The perceived probability that Patrick Baldwin Jr. picks Milwaukee? 30 percent.
