An addition has been made to the Duke basketball roster.

The Duke basketball program landed a commitment from the brother of a Blue Devil legend on Thursday night.

Bates Jones, the brother of former Duke football quarterback Daniel Jones, is transferring to Duke from Davidson as a graduate student.

Jones also has a sister, Ruthie, who is the goalkeeper for the Blue Devils women’s soccer team.

The news of the transfer was first reported by The News and Observer.

Daniel Jones was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the New York Giants and is getting set to enter his third season with Big Blue while Ruthie Jones was just named as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

In his senior season with the Wildcats, Bates Jones averaged 2.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 12.7 minutes per game. He is listed at 6-foot-8, 225 pounds.

Jones will be on scholarship for the 2021-22 season and will be just the second graduate transfer in the program under Mike Krzyzewski after Patrick Tape spent one season with the Blue Devils a year ago.

Duke currently has nine players under scholarship for the 2021-22 campaign.

Where does the newest Duke basketball player fit into the rotation?

The appearances for Bates Jones are likely to be few and far between.

While his size and experience are intriguing, Jones will likely only see the floor in an emergency situation or if a game is already decided in the closing minutes.

In a comparison, expect Jones to play a pre-senior year Justin Robinson role for the Blue Devils as Duke will be talented in the front-court with freshman Paolo Banchero combining with sophomore Mark Williams.

The Blue Devils also have the ability to play sophomore Henry Coleman off the bench while freshman Adrian Griffin Jr. could play power forward at 6-foot-7 if needed.

Coach K is still looking to add guard depth as well as another forward this offseason.

Duke is coming off its worst season in recent memory after missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1994-95 season.
