The Duke basketball team is a punchline to an NCAA Tournament commercial.

It’s been 26 years since the Duke basketball program did not make the NCAA Tournament, and it did not take long for the Blue Devils to become the center of the jokes.

Mike Krzyzewski and his program were at the center of many television and radio shows on Sunday night into Monday as there has not been an NCAA Tournament without the Blue Devils since 1995.

Twitter also had a field day with the official ending to the 2020-21 Duke basketball season.

However, CBS, the broadcast home for the NCAA Tournament, also had some fun at the expense of the Blue Devils, but not for missing the Big Dance, rather its loss to No. 15 seed Lehigh back in 2012.

Led by future lottery pick CJ McCollum, Lehigh upset the Blue Devils in the Round of 64 as a 12-point underdog, much to the delight of Duke haters who still bring up the misfortunes of that game.

McCollum poured in 30 points in the upset victory while the commercial points out Duke did have a studded team led by freshman guard Austin Rivers and forwards Mason and Miles Plumlee.

Rivers and Mason Plumlee were tied for the team-high of 19 points as the guard was 5-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-7 from three-point range in addition to four rebounds and one assist.

The younger Plumlee was a perfect 9-of-9 from the field, adding 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Miles Plumlee struggled with four points and six rebounds on just 2-of-4 shooting in the loss.

Duke basketball accustomed to the criticism

The clip from The Young and the Restless should not be unexpected as many revel in the misfortunes of the Blue Devils, but that comes with the territory of being associated with the Duke basketball program.

In the last two seasons, Mike Krzyzewski has seen his team record a victory in its final game of the year, but it was not in the National Championship Game.

Hopefully, the unprecedented times in college basketball are over and the 2021-22 season looks much more normal.
