Ranking the 11 Duke basketball contributors through 11 games
By Matt Giles
2. Duke basketball freshman guard DJ Steward
GAME AVERAGES: 32.5 minutes, 13.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.3 steals, 0.8 blocks, 2.1 turnovers, 1.5 fouls
SHOOTING PERCENTAGES: 42.3 percent from the field, 32.3 percent from beyond the arc, 86.7 percent from the foul line
SEASON-HIGH STATS: 39 minutes vs. Wake Forest on Jan. 9, 24 points vs. Coppin State on Nov. 28, nine rebounds vs. Coppin State, six assists vs. Bellarmine on Dec. 4, three steals vs. Boston College on Jan. 6, two blocks (twice), five turnovers vs. Illinois on Dec. 8, three fouls (twice)
OVERALL ASSESSMENT: As a bucket-getter, DJ Steward has the necessary nifty tools to explode on any given night with a wide array of scores from all over the court; furthermore, he’s conclusively the group’s No. 1 shooter from the charity stripe. And as a rebounder, the 6-foot-2, 165-pound Mr. Positivity has a nose for the ball that makes up for his diminutive stature.
It’s also worth noting that Steward leads all ACC freshmen in points and minutes per game in addition to field goal percentage and free throw percentage. All that aside, though, as is the case with everyone on this list other than this next guy, he hasn’t been Mr. Consistency.
CURRENT GRADE: 90 (A-)
