Duke basketball honor roll for Week 1 of ACC play

Matthew Hurt

To no one’s surprise, Matthew Hurt led the team in scoring this week with 18 points and five rebounds, shooting 8-for-17 from the field. Amidst Duke’s struggles this year, Hurt has been this team’s saving grace as its leading scorer and most composed leader.

The Freshman Trio

Combo guard DJ Steward, point guard Jeremy Roach, and power forward Jaemyn Brakefield combined for 40 of Duke’s 75 points on Wednesday to bring home the road win.

DJ Steward led the bunch with 16 points and seven rebounds while going 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Jeremy Roach did his part, putting up 14 points while going 5-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from three. Meanwhile, Jaemyn Brakefield showed up off the bench this week, putting up 10 points while going 4-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from three.

With the best freshman among the group out, these three rookies did exactly what they needed to do this week, hopefully boosting their confidence as they head into Week 2 of conference play…
