Duke football season mercifully comes to end with another blowout loss
The Duke football season is finally over!
After a grueling 11 weeks, the Duke football season has finally come to an end, and it did so in fitting fashion.
The Blue Devils (2-9, 1-9 ACC) went out with a bang, tying their season-high for points allowed, 56, to the Florida State Seminoles (3-6, 2-6 ACC).
Before Saturday afternoon, the lowly Seminoles’ season-high in points was 41 points against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, the only non-ACC team Florida State played this season.
As for conference foes, Florida State was able to put 31 points on the board in its biggest victory of the season against the then-No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels.
In its final four games, Duke allowed 56, 56, 48, and 56 points, respectively, to North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Miami (FL), and Florida State. Consistency!
On the other hand, Duke was able to score 35 points in its loss, its most against an ACC team this season. The Blue Devils posted 53 points in a victory over Charlotte.

However, starting quarterback Chase Brice was injured in the loss to Florida State after fumbling along the sideline, and it was true freshman Luca Diamont who replaced him instead of redshirt sophomore Gunnar Holmberg.
Brice finished the afternoon with just 81 passing yards on 7-of-17 passing with a touchdown, two interceptions, and a fumble.
Diamont was 5-of-8 for 38 yards and an interception with 60 rushing yards on 12 attempts.
The running game was the best facet of the game for the Blue Devils once again as Mataeo Durant paced Duke with 127 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries while Deon Jackson also found the end zone once on 14 rushes for 34 yards.
Florida State rattled off the first 28 points of the game, Duke took the next 21, and then the Seminoles responded with 21 unanswered points of their own before the two teams traded touchdowns prior to the end of the game.
What happens next for Duke football?
Pending the Blue Devils do retain David Cutcliffe as the head coach of the program, he must do a thorough review of the team’s coaching staff as the results of the 2020 season were unacceptable.

The only small positive this team can take away from the year was the positive impact of the special teams, although that was mostly due to miscues from opponents.
As of now, Duke is scheduled to open the 2021 season on the road against the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday, September 4.
