Grading Duke basketball sophomore Wendell Moore through three games

Wendell Moore’s shot and confidence appear to be broken at the moment. However, that hasn’t stopped the 6-foot-5, 215-pound wing from chucking up ceaseless attempts.

The former four-star prep out of Charlotte, N.C., is currently 7-for-27 from the field, including a 1-for-9 clip from downtown. As ugly as those stats are, consider the fact that between the past two games, Moore went 1-for-17 from the field, including his 0-for-7 bricklaying from 3-point land. Problem is, despite the clanking, he sits No. 3 on the team in field goal attempts and 3-point tries.

Now, add in Moore’s seven turnovers, most of which have come as a result of the indecision-related mistakes that he so often made as a freshman while averaging more than four turnovers per 40 minutes on the court. Plus, note his low totals in rebounds (nine) and assists (five).

Maybe the ghastly performances are due to Moore putting too much pressure on himself as a member of the Preseason All-ACC Second Team; in other words, maybe he’ll figure it out. Or perhaps the hype, primarily stemming from his long arms and all the encouraging coachspeak leading up to the season, simply exceeds the reality of the situation.
