Will more rookies be among the Duke basketball starters in the second game?

Generally speaking, when it comes to starting lineups, Mike Krzyzewski has become increasingly unpredictable over the years. Correction, there is one easy prediction in this regard: the 41st-year Duke basketball head coach will be unpredictable from one game to the next.

Last season, the Hall of Famer gave at least one starting nod to 11 different Blue Devils and used 14 combinations in total across the team’s 31 games. Sure, various bumps and bruises played a part in Krzyzewski’s frequent lineup tweaks. But there’s no doubt that several other variables, such as player moods, matchups, progressions, and disappointments, factored in as well.

Now, fast forward to the present. It’s highly doubtful Coach K has found his one-and-only starting five through one game this season, an 81-71 dodged bullet at home against Coppin State on Saturday. Rather, we may never again see that starting lineup: senior Jordan Goldwire, sophomore Wendell Moore, junior Joey Baker, freshman Jalen Johnson, and sophomore Matthew Hurt.

While most of that cast of Blue Devils was no surprise — given the value of steely veterans over nervous newbies — they lost the opening four minutes to the Eagles, 10-8.

With that in mind, while telepathically attempting to access Krzyzewski’s mind, let’s take a stab at who the starters will be inside a crowd-less Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (ESPN) when No. 6 Duke hosts No. 8 Michigan State. Let’s begin at point guard…
