Duke football will not play Wake Forest this weekend because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

An outbreak of coronavirus has hit the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, and their game against the Duke football program will not be played this Saturday.

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced the news on Tuesday night, citing that the Demon Deacons would not have enough available scholarship players due to positive tests, contact tracing, and quarantining.

Wake Forest is coming off a tough loss at the hands of the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday afternoon, while Duke just came off of its second bye week of the season, which sets back trying to see these two teams play this season as the Blue Devils do not have any more open dates.

Duke’s latest game was also against North Carolina, and the Tar Heels dropped an embarrassing loss on the Blue Devils at Wallace Wade Stadium on November 7.

David Cutcliffe and his team have not had a game canceled or postponed this season because of the virus, but it has seen some adjustments in its schedule, most notably pushing up its game against Virginia to September 26.

What’s next for the Duke football program?

Duke will now be off for back-to-back weeks and will only have two games remaining in the 2020 season, barring the matchup with Wake Forest does not get rescheduled.

The Blue Devils will go back on the road to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday, November 28. The start time has not been announced for that meeting as of yet. The ACC is on hold in terms of announcing all kickoff times for games next Saturday.

Duke will close out its season at home against the Florida State Seminoles on December 5, with a time yet to be announced for that matchup as well.

There will be no bowl game for the second consecutive season in Durham as the Blue Devils are a lowly 2-6 this year.
