Why Duke basketball’s Tre Jones fell in the draft: SO MUCH COMPETITION

This year’s draft was loaded with point guards. Five of the first 15 players off the board are listed as point guards, and nine became first-round selections. Altogether, 13 point guards heard their names before Tre Jones on Wednesday night.

While Jones is easily one of the best, few NBA teams this year had a dire need at the point guard position.

Plus, most franchises that are contending for a championship are not looking to get point guard help in the draft. NBA teams typically prefer adding a veteran point guard through free agency or trade. But it is no surprise that Jones ended up with the Spurs, a team that is trying to contend in the loaded Western Conference.

Jones can come in and earn immediate minutes. He does not have to play a huge role either. He can be a spark plug off the bench and a reliable perimeter defender who can also run the offense.
