SHELDEN WILLIAMS (2002-06)

It’s a dangerous thing to compare a raw freshman to a guy with his name hanging in the rafters of Cameron Indoor Stadium. But when thinking of incoming big man Mark Williams, I can’t really think of anyone he’d rather be than “The Landlord” Shelden Williams.

First of all, I have to say that Mark Williams shouldn’t try to emulate The Landlord’s offensive numbers; Shelden Williams averaged 8.2 points per game in his freshman season. Where Mark Williams needs to be more like Shelden Williams is his defensive presence.

Much like most of the last few years, except for last season (bon voyage, Vernon Carey Jr.), this Duke team will be a slash-and-kick scoring team. Down low, buckets are not likely to come with Mark Williams having his back to the basket.

Mark Williams will need to be a rim protector and rebounder while on the floor, and Shelden Williams provides proper film to watch on that front. After all, Shelden Williams holds the Duke basketball records with 422 blocks and 1,262 rebounds for his Blue Devil career…
