Duke football: Fans not allowed in Wallace Wade Stadium in 2020 season

Duke football fans will not be able to cheer on the Blue Devils in Wallace Wade Stadium as the school announced changes to attendance policies.

It felt like an inevitable decision as Duke University announced that there will be no in-person attendance at fall sporting events this season. The athletic department announced the news in a release on Monday morning.

The reasoning for the announcement is the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as the school originally hoped to have at least 20% capacity at Wallace Wade Stadium this season.

While schedules have yet to be released for fall sports, such as men’s cross country, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and volleyball, the sport with the biggest impact on no fans in the stands will clearly be football.

However, Duke is implementing a program where fans can purchase a cardboard cutout and have that placed in the stands out of support for David Cutcliffe and the Blue Devils.

Fans also have the chance to have their cutout signed by the Duke head coach if they were to purchase that extravagant of a package.

Schools such as North Carolina and North Carolina State have suspended football practices due to COVID-19 outbreaks, but the football season is scheduled as possible in the ACC despite Duke’s first opponent, Notre Dame, also briefly shutting down practice because of an uptick in cases on campus.

The Blue Devils are scheduled to be in South Bend on September 12 to face the Fighting Irish as the home opener will be against Boston College on September 19 at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Despite not playing in front of any fans in Durham, there is still a chance that the 2020 Duke football team could be playing in front of limited capacity fans in traveling to other schools in the conference if the schedule proceeds as planned.
