A tradition is building in Durham with Duke basketball head coaches being the siren sounders for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Mike Krzyzewski got a crack at being the siren sounder first for the Carolina Hurricanes, and now it was Kara Lawson’s turn.

Both Duke basketball head coaches cranked the pregame siren for North Carolina’s hockey team as it continues its quest for the Stanley Cup.

Krzyzewski sounded the siren for the Hurricanes’ first game back since the shutdown of the National Hockey League season against the New York Rangers in the Qualifying Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but Lawson had a bigger task at hand.

In perhaps Carolina’s biggest game to date, trailing the Boston Bruins 2-1 in the First Round of the playoffs, the Hurricanes called upon the new head women’s basketball coach of the Duke Blue Devils to try and give them the motivation and energy they needed.

Unfortunately for Lawson, she did not have the success of her counterpart Coach K as the Hurricanes blew a 2-0 lead in the third period to fall to the Bruins 4-3 and get pushed to the brink of elimination, trailing 3-1 in the series.

However, while Lawson was not able to will her favorite hockey team to a victory, she was supporting her Boston Celtics at workouts as her former team embarked on its playoff journey on Monday with a victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in the First Round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

Kara Lawson was named as the fifth head coach in Duke women’s basketball history on July 11 after former head coach Joanne P. McCallie stepped down from her position on July 2.

There has not been a schedule released for the Lady Blue Devils for the pending 2020-21 season as the NCAA and the ACC try to formulate a plan to play the year in a safe manner amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Game Five between the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins will take place on Wednesday, August 19 at 4:00pm EST on the NBC Sports Network.
