An explosively slick prep would welcome Duke basketball to his recruitment.

Thanks to the elite résumé of Mike Krzyzewski as the 73-year-old enters his fifth decade on the Duke basketball throne, it’s commonplace nowadays for top high school stars to publicly ask for attention from his staff. But the program’s future sends thanks every time it happens because, without a doubt, such occurrences help to solidify the Blue Devils as bluebloods in the present and moving forward.

Remember, Duke hasn’t always been a five-star magnet, and there’s no guarantee it’ll retain that status forever. For now, though, seemingly any time a premier recruit runs through his wishlist of suitors, the Blue Devils pop up.

And that was the case at an AAU event in St. Louis over the weekend. After displaying five-star potential (major recruiting sites have yet to rate or rank rising sophomores), Jeremiah Johnson reeled off to Travis Branham of 247Sports six invitations: “I’d like to hear from Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Purdue, and Vanderbilt.”

Based on Branham’s observations — in combination with the quick trigger, advanced handles, and sensational passing evident from the freshman-year mixtape below — Johnson should eventually have no problem adding dozens of more high-major offers to the ones he currently holds from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State:

“The 6-foot-2 and 160-pound Oklahoma City (Okla.) Putnam City North point guard had a standout weekend at the Bradley Beal Elite Challenge this past Saturday, displaying an impressive blend of playmaking and scoring ability, especially in the pick and roll.”

Also in attendance to watch the Johnson show was Rivals analyst Eric Bossi, who weighed in on Monday with a similar takeaway:

“I got my first look at highly touted Oklahoma point guard Jeremiah Johnson, and it was an impressive one. He’s skilled, has a great feel for scoring around the rim, and competes.”

It may be a while until Duke basketball comes calling

At the moment, Coach K and his gang are still a long way from wrapping up their efforts on the 2021 trail and have yet to even officially target any 2022 prospects.

With that in mind, it could be quite some time until Jeremiah Johnson potentially attracts significant Blue Devil interest. In the meantime, a couple of other interesting 2023 names Duke basketball fans might want to know — particularly in light of their surnames — are Jaylen Carey and Bronny James.
