  • Jan. 1, 1944, regular season, Madison Square Garden: Long Island 59, Duke 57 (OT)

Another overtime. Another loss at Madison Square Garden. This time, though, the defeat occurred at the venue that existed before the current one. And this game marked the first time the Blue Devils had ever played at any MSG; also, it marked the largest crowd (more than 16,000) to ever see Duke play.

Like the loss to St. Bonaventure, the outcome was hardly an upset. After all, Long Island was a national powerhouse at the time, having lost three or fewer games in eight of the 11 seasons between 1933 and 1944, including the 1943-44 campaign.

Nowadays, the Sharks have made four of the past nine NCAA Tournament fields, each time as either a No. 15 or No. 16 seed. Therefore, it’s certainly conceivable Duke could face Long Island in March in the near future and possibly get payback for the lone loss that happened more than 75 years ago.
