- March 27, 1971, Postseason NIT third-place game, Madison Square Garden: St. Bonaventure 92, Duke 88 (OT)
Exactly nine months before losing to St. Peter’s for a second time at Madison Square Garden, the Duke basketball program fell, inside the same building, in what remains its only meeting in history against St. Bonaventure. Plus, in what will become a common theme the rest of the way on this list, the loss happened in overtime.
Yet the victory by the Bonnies, which ended the Blue Devils’ 1970-71 season and followed Duke’s four-point defeat to rival North Carolina in the NIT semifinals, wasn’t exactly an upset. That season, the guys from Durham finished 20-10 under second-year head coach Bucky Waters, who as a strict disciplinarian was starting to irritate his players and fanbase alike. Meanwhile, St. Bonaventure capped off an impressive 21-6 campaign.
Seeing that the Bonnies have only received an invite to the Big Dance twice this century, it seems probable they will avoid another game against Duke for quite some time and thereby keep their undefeated clip against the Blue Devils intact.
