Duke basketball: The six programs with perfect records against Blue Devils
By Matt Giles
Undefeated versus the Duke basketball program: East Tennessee State
4. East Tennessee State
Current conference: Southern Conference
All-time winning percentage: 54.6 (984-817)
NCAA Tournament record: 2-11
Record against Duke: 1-0
- Dec. 14, 1968, regular season, Cameron Indoor Stadium: East Tennessee State 71, No. 9 Duke 63
Oddly enough, the final team under the now-late Vic Bubas, who guided the Blue Devils to three Final Four appearances and four ACC Tournament titles across only 10 seasons at the helm (1959-60 to 1968-69), is responsible for yet another program now sporting an undefeated record against Duke.
However, even though the 1968 loss to East Tennessee State came at home and with the Blue Devils sitting inside the top 10 of the AP Poll, it came at the hands of a program that was fresh off a trip to the Sweet 16 the prior season.
Taking into account the fact the Buccaneers have reached the NCAA Tournament five times this century while never earning higher than a No. 13 seed, it’s reasonable to think Duke could have a shot to tie the series at one win apiece via a first-round meeting in a future Big Dance.
