Duke basketball stars who could’ve starred in football: DE Art Heyman

Though I don’t claim to be old enough to have watched the now-late Duke great Art Heyman in person, my eyes tell me that the guy whose jersey No. 25 hangs from Cameron Indoor Stadium’s rafters wasn’t the type to back down from a fight. His 1961 on-court bar brawl with North Carolina legend Larry Brown, has gone down in the history books as one of the key moments that escalated the game’s greatest rivalry one more notch.

In addition to all the stories about Heyman’s brazen personality and overall talent, the instant 1-2 jabs he delivered from his sturdy 6-foot-5 frame — after Brown threw the first punch — are indicative of a star-studded, borderline-dirty defensive end. And viewing it from his day, his 205 pounds would have been on par for the position.
