Coach K’s absence due to exhaustion, beginning with the 13th game, led to a 4-15 record the rest of the way. One blown lead after another. Some talent. Too much youth. Too few leaders. Turnovers galore (Jeff Capel averaged 3.6 per game on his own). Poor foul shooting (67.0 percent for the team, no one over 79.0 percent).
A pitiful year in light of the program’s preceding stretch of seven Final Four appearances in nine years. Even the Duke basketball shot of the year resulted in a loss:
