THE SEASON SYNOPSIS
Coach K’s first championship squad may rank the lowest of the five here, but that doesn’t make it any less special. In fact, without the 1990-91 Duke basketball team’s determined revenge effort against UNLV in the Final Four matchup, who knows if the program would have ever won its first natty.
The key to the equation, of course, was the addition of freshman Grant Hill to the already superb duo of Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley. With Hill’s athleticism and smooth aura, the Blue Devils were able to rid Coach K of the stigma for not being able to win the big one. Simply put, by getting over the hump in Indianapolis, they further set the stage for all the good times in Durham that have followed.
