THE SEASON SYNOPSIS

In November and early December 2010, the team in Durham had the makings of one that could potentially top this type of list. Not only had the program returned two of the three major pieces from the previous season’s champs, but it had also added arguably the most gifted recruit to ever land at Duke in Kyrie Irving.

Eight games in, though, the nightmare toe injury occurred. Yet even with Irving out across all ACC play, the Blue Devils figured out how to look like title contenders. It was his coming back that might have been the problem. Nolan Smith had become the point guard in admirable fashion.

Major position shifts and whatnot, all stemming from one player’s return in March, proved too much for Duke to overcome as it subsequently suffered a sudden second-half beatdown from Arizona in the Sweet 16.
