THE SEASON SYNOPSIS

The 1987-88 Duke basketball team included an encouraging mix of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Plus, the roster contained the best defender in the country in Billy King. As seen in the video below, King forced Temple legend Mark Macon into a 6-for-29 shooting night; in doing so, he helped the Blue Devils stun the No. 1 seed Owls and advance to the Final Four.

Despite the loss to Kansas in the next game, Duke basketball faithful were delighted to have seen for the first time under Coach K a 3-0 sweep of UNC. Danny Ferry had reached another level of purity on offense. Robert Brickey, as he demonstrated with a game-winning block of Tar Heel guard Jeff Lebo in Chapel Hill, was an otherworldly athlete.

Throw in the consistent scoring of Kevin Strickland and the passionate play of guys like Quin Snyder. One of K’s great squads, indeed.
