Vernon Carey Jr. named ACC Freshman and Player of the Week

The Duke basketball big man, Vernon Carey Jr., was named as the ACC Freshman and Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Vernon Carey Jr. continues his stellar play as the Duke big man was named as the ACC Freshman and Player of the Week for his performances against Pittsburgh and Syracuse this week.

This is the second time this season Carey has been named the Freshman and Player of the Week for the conference but back on November 25 the Blue Devil shared the Player of the Week Award with Georgia Tech’s Michael Devoe.

Carey Jr. is now the ACC Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season and the Player of the Week for the second time in his collegiate career.

At home against the Pittsburgh Panthers, Vernon Carey Jr. led the Blue Devils with 26 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists on 11-of-17 shooting from the field and 1-of-2 from 3-point range in 35 minutes as Duke defeated Pitt, 79-67.

Duke then began its three game road trip with a trip to the Carrier Dome to face the Syracuse Orange and the Blue Devils rode its superstar big man to victory.

Against the Orange the Florida native went for 26 points once again and a career high 17 rebounds on 9-of-14 shooting and 8-of-10 from the free throw line in addition to one assist and one steal in a 97-88 victory.

The 17 rebounds the Duke freshman posted on Saturday were the most as a visiting player in the Carrier Dome against Syracuse since Adonal Foyle and Patrick Ewing .

Vernon Carey Jr. now has ten double-doubles on the season and he leads the ACC in field goal percentage at 59.7 percent while averaging 17.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.6 blocks per game.

Duke and its star freshman will face the Boston College Eagles for the second time this season as Carey Jr. posted his second lowest scoring total fo the season with nine points against the Eagles in just 20 minutes played but the Blue Devils won by 39 points for its first ACC win of the season back on December 31.

Tipoff is set for 7:00pm EST in the Conte Forum and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN.
