Tre Jones, Vernon Carey Jr. get recognized by ACC for outstanding week

In the ACC’s weekly honors, two Duke Basketball players were recognized for their efforts in two road victories, Tre Jones and Vernon Carey Jr.

Tre Jones and Vernon Carey Jr. led the Duke Blue Devils to two road victories this week and the duo was recognized by the ACC for their efforts.

After a shocking loss to Stephen F. Austin two weeks ago, the Blue Devils with a win over Winthrop before facing two daunting tasks on the road.

Duke was traveling to East Lansing on Tuesday to face the Michigan State Spartans and then heading to Blacksburg on Friday to face the Virginia Tech Hokies, a place where the Blue Devils have recently struggled.

Jones and Carey Jr. led Duke in those two road victories as the Blue Devils passed with flying colors, winning both games by more than 12 points.

Tre Jones was named as the Co-ACC Player of the Week while Vernon Carey Jr. was named as the ACC Freshman of the Week.

In the win over Michigan State, Jones scored 20 points while dishing out 12 assists to go along with his two rebounds, three steals, and a block. The Apple Valley, Minnesota native shot 6-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw line in Duke’s 87-75 victory.

For an encore on Friday night, Jones led the Blue Devils with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists, and a steal while shooting 7-of-15 from the field in the 77-63 win for the Blue Devils.

Tre Jones won the award for the first time this season but is sharing the ACC Player of the Week Award with Jordan Nwora of Louisville.

As for the freshman Vernon Carey Jr., he poured salt in the wounds of the Michigan State faithful who are still upset he did not become a Spartan with a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds to be paired with three blocks.

Carey Jr. was 8-of-16 from the floor and 9-of-12 from the free throw line in the win.

On Friday night the freshman didn’t see as much time as he normally does, but the Florida native as able to put up 12 points and five rebounds in just 15 minutes although his streak of six games with a double-double ended against the Hokies.

Vernon Carey Jr. was named as the ACC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, tying him with Landers Nolley II for the most this season.

Tre Jones and Vernon Carey Jr. will not be back on the floor until December 19 when the No. 7 Duke Blue Devils host the Wofford Terriers.
