Duke’s chances for a bowl game ends as Wake Forest tops Blue Devils
The hopes of a bowl game ended for the Duke Football team as the Blue Devils fell on the road to Wake Forest on Saturday night.
Duke dug itself a hole in the last four games and in order to get out of the hole the Blue Devils needed to win its last two games of the season to make a bowl game, starting on Saturday night on the road against Wake Forest.
On Saturday night it was the Demon Deacons who dug themselves a hole in the early going, seeing Duke jump out to a 10-3 lead but Wake Forest would score the next 17 points unanswered en route to its 39-27 victory.

While the Duke offense looked better on Saturday, to an extent, a majority of the points came on two 98-yard kick returns for touchdowns by Damond Philyaw-Johnson.
Quentin Harris completed 14-of-23 passes for 163 yards with a touchdown and an interception in addition to his 39 rushing yards.
Mataeo Durant had seven rushes for 71 yards while Deon Jackson only had seven carries for 26 yards.
The same cannot be said for Wake Forest who ran all over the Blue Devils for the second season in a row.
Last year the Demon Deacons ran for 340 yards and three touchdown in Wallace Wade Stadium on Duke and this season Wake put up 334 yards and three touchdowns in another winning effort.
Quarterback Jamie Newman led the way with 144 yards and a touchdown while Kenneth Walker III went for 113 yards on 17 rushes and a touchdown while Cade Carney also found the end zone in the midst of his 71 yards on the.
Newman also completed 14-of-25 passes for 284 yards and one touchdown while finding Kendall Hinton six times for 189 yards and once for a score.
Wake Forest improves to 8-3 heading into the final week of the regular season against the Syracuse Orange while Duke drops to 5-7 and is eliminated from bowl contention and will host Miami (FL) in its final game of a disappointing 2019 season next Saturday.
