Former Duke Baseball star James Marvel makes MLB debut with Pirates

Former Duke Baseball star James Marvel made his Major League Baseball debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals.

On Sunday afternoon, former Duke Baseball pitching star James Marvel made his Major League Baseball debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Marvel picked up the loss in the game, but his offense let him down against the National League Central leading St. Louis Cardinals.

The former Blue Devil threw five innings, allowing four hits and two runs while walking two and striking out two as the Pirates lost 2-0 against St. Louis.

In the fifth inning Harrison Bader his an RBI single to center field to get the Cardinals on the scoreboard and as Marvel pitched into the sixth innings, he walked Kolten Wong which was followed by an RBI double to Paul Goldschmidt to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead and chase Marvel from the game.

James Marvel was selected in the 36th Round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates and in the minor league the Moraga, California native was 40-26 with a 3.45 ERA in 92 games pitched.

In 11 games started this season with the AAA Indianapolis Indians, Marvel was 7-0 with a 2.67 ERA.

In 2013 and 2014, James Marvel pitched in 14 games with the Duke Blue Devils and accumulated a 6-4 record with a 2.94 ERA while surrendering 22 earned runs in 67 and one-third innings pitched.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have no chance at making the MLB Playoffs with a 63-81 record on the season with about two weeks left in the season. The organization is trying to look at what players may be worth hanging onto as the team looks to rebuild and contend for a playoff spot in 2020.

Pittsburgh has not announced a starting pitcher for its game on Friday, September 13 against the Chicago Cubs, which would be the next game James Marvel should start on a regular amount of rest for a starting pitcher.
