The New York Mets were unable to push across enough runs for former Duke Baseball star Marcus Stroman in a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

After losing six straight games at home, the New York Mets were looking to catapult themselves back into the thick of the National League Wild Card race with a sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night.

New York would hand the ball to its trade deadline acquisition, former Duke Baseball legend, Marcus Stroman.

This season with the Toronto Blue Jays and the Mets, Stroman was been the victim of minimal run support and it has affected his win-loss record in a negative way.

Things didn’t change much on Sunday despite a 1st inning home run from Pete Alonso.

As the Mets took a 1-0 lead, Philadelphia responded in the second with a solo home run from Brad Miller to tie the game and a bases loaded RBI single from Corey Dickerson to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.

That would be all the scoring in the game until the 8th inning when the Mets were able to get Stroman off the hook for a loss by tying the game at two, with Brandon Nimmo scoring on a wild pitch.

Three Philadelphia runs in the bottom half of the innings would be all she wrote for the Mets on this night, dropping the series finale to the Phillies, 5-2.

Marcus Stroman pitched into the seventh inning, but could not record an out in the frame while allowing seven hits and two runs with six strikeouts and just two walks.

New York dropped to 69-67 on the season with the loss and are currently four games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second Wild Card spot with three other teams in front of them.

Stroman is scheduled to be back on the mound against the same Phillies team on Saturday, September 7 at 7:10pm EST at Citi Field in Queens, New York. That game can be seen on Fox Sports 1.
