Starting linebacker for the Duke Football team Koby Quansah underwent surgery for a broken thumb on Thursday just days before the season opener against Alabama.

Quansah under went surgery on Friday and will be out ‘indefinitely’.

The Blue Devils only have days left to the start of the season when Duke heads down to Atlanta, Georgia to face the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game at 3:30pm EST on ABC.

Quansah was just named a captain for the 2019 season by head coach David Cutcliffe and was ready to fill the shoes of the former dynamic linebacking duo of Joe Giles-Harris and Ben Humphreys.

The Manchester, Connecticut native recorded 38 total tackles last season and three and a half tackles for a loss in addition to one pass deflection.

In his Duke career, the 6-foot-1 linebacker has played a total of 56 games with 101 total tackles, one sack, a pass breakup, one fumble recovery, and one forced fumble.

While Duke has said Quansah is out indefinitely, he has not been ruled out for the showdown against Alabama.

According to the Duke depth chart, red-shirt junior Xander Gagnon would replace Quansah on the field but his experience is very limited with just 13 total  tackles, starting just one game.

The injury to Koby Quansah isn’t the first injury the Blue Devils had to work around this season as projected starting wide receiver Jake Bobo and back-up quarterback Gunnar Holmberg also went down with training camp injuries.

Bobo suffered a fractured clavicle while Holmberg has a knee injury. Both injures required surgery and like Quansah, were labeled as out “indefinitely”.

Taking on a national powerhouse and National Championship contender is no easy task and when Duke’s best players are getting injured before the Blue Devils even take the field will make things that much more difficult.
