Former Duke Basketball big man Marvin Bagley III has withdrawn from consideration for Team USA just days after receiving a promotion to the national roster.

On Friday night after the Team USA scrimmage in Las Vegas, Marvin Bagley III was promoted from the Select Team to the National Team for consideration to make the roster for the FIBA World Cup.

Bagley was promoted with San Antonio Spurs guard Derrick White as Bam Adebayo and Thaddeus Young were cut from the team.

However, on Sunday night the former Duke Blue Devil removed himself from consideration from Team USA to focus on the upcoming season with the Sacramento Kings.

Before his withdrawal, Bagley was one of three Kings players who are trying to make the team, guard De’Aaron Fox and wing Harrison Barnes.

After a week of training camp in Las Vegas, Team USA will reconvene this week in Los Angeles as head coach Gregg Popovich must have a roster of 12 players by August 17.

There will now be 16 players heading to L.A. upon Bagley’s withdrawal.

Bagley struggled in the scrimmage as he played with the Select Team, ending his night with eight points and three rebounds on just 3-of-11 shooting in 16 minutes of action.

In his rookie season with the Kings, Bagley was selected to the All-Rookie First team and played in 62 games, averaging 14.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game as Sacramento remained in the playoff hunt for a majority of the season.

The Duke Basketball program still has two players competing for a Team USA roster spot, Jayson Tatum and Mason Plumlee, as the FIBA World Cup starts on August 31 in China.

As the team will begin activities in California on Tuesday, August 13, Team USA will scrimmage Spain in Anaheim on August 16 and then travel to Australia for a pre-World Cup Tour beginning on August 22.
