The former Duke Basketball sharpshooter, Gary Trent Jr., flirted with a triple-double at the NBA Summer League Tuesday afternoon.

After a 31-point barrage on Sunday night for the Portland Trail Blazers, Gary Trent Jr.‘s shots weren’t falling quite like they did against the Houston Rockets, so the former Blue Devil flirted with triple-double numbers against the Utah Jazz.

In a team-high 31 minutes of action, Trent Jr. scored just 12 points but also had eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals. The five assists were the most of anyone on the Blazers.

The guard had good looks from the field but just couldn’t get his shots to find nylon, going 4-for-15 from the floor and 2-of-7 from 3-point range. The Blazer guard did make both of his free throws.

This is the closest performance the shooter has come to a triple-double with his best stat line in the G-League with the Texas Legends being 39-7-3 and while at Duke the closest Trent Jr. came to that elusive triple-double was 14-4-5 in a victory over Pittsburgh.

Trent Jr. only played in 15 games with the Portland Trail Blazers in his rookie season and his best game came in the regular season finale when the rookie scored 19 points and gathered two rebonds and three steals.

His teammate, Anfernee Simons, exploded for a 35 points in this afternoon’s game, but the Blazers fell to the Jazz in a close game, 97-93.

Both of the second year guards, Gary Trent Jr. and Anfernee Simons, had a +/- rating of +8, the highest of anyone on the Portland Trail Blazers.

At 1-2 in the Las Vegas Summer League, the Portland Trail Blazers will look to get back to .500 in the last “regular season” game before the “postseason” tournament on Thursday, July 11  against the Oklahoma City Thunder at 8:00pm EST and can be seen on NBA TV.
