VCU struck first on the afternoon with a run in third inning against Ben Gross, but the Blue Devils would hold the Rams right there.

Duke answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth and that’s all the scoring that would be done in Game 1 as the Blue Devils came away with a 2-1 victory.

Chase Cheek and Ethan Murray were the two Blue Devils to drive in runs on the afternoon while Gross (6-3) picked up the win after throwing four innings, allowing three hits and just the one run, one walk, and four strikeouts.

Bryce Jarvis came in relief of Gross and yielded one hit and one walk, while striking out five in two and two-thirds innings pitched.

Thomas Girard (8) record a seven out save, while striking out four of those VCU batters, in addition to allowing one hit and walking one.

Approximately 45 minutes later the two teams took the field again for Game 2 of the double header and it was another nail biter.

VCU plated three runs in the first inning, but the Blue Devils would fight its way back into the game, scoring a run in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings, with the tying run coming in the eighth on Matt Mevis coming around to score on a throwing error from first.

Joey Loperfido and Kyle Gallagher both had one RBI apiece for Duke.

Bill Chillari started the game on the mound for the Blue Devils, throwing four innings and allowing six hits and three runs, while walking one and striking out four.

Cooper Stinson, Matt Dockman, and Jack Carey were excellent out of the bullpen in relief to keep VCU quiet, but Carey (3-1) allowed walk and a hit by pitch in the tenth and the Rams were able to capitalize with both runs coming around to score to beat the Blue Devils 5-3 and split the double header.

Duke’s record evened out at 28-18 on the season with a mid-week game against Liberty on Wednesday followed by a crucial three game weekend series against the No. 7 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets starting on Friday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
