The Los Angeles Chargers have signed Duke Football tight end Daniel Helm as an undrafted free agent after the 2019 NFL Draft.

Another Duke Football player is headed to the NFL after signing as an undrafted free agent with Daniel Helm inking a deal with the Los Angles Chargers.

Daniel Helm did not start his collegiate career in Durham with the Blue Devils, but rather he transferred in after his freshman season with Tennessee.

More from Ball Durham

In Knoxville with the Volunteers, Helm only played in five games and caught just six passes for 37 yards.

Sitting out the 2015 season, Daniel Helm was still eligible to play three seasons with Duke and although he never posted eye-popping statistics with the Blue Devils, he was always a reliable target for Daniel Jones.

In his first season with the Blue Devils in 2016, Helm played in ten games and caught 21 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

His stats in Durham would hover around those numbers for the remaining two seasons.

In 2017, Helm had 22 receptions for 261 yards and also two touchdowns, while in his senior season in 2018, he reeled in a career high 26 passes for a career high 271 yards and still finding the end zone twice.

In terms of yardage, Helm’s best game in his senior season came in a loss against Clemson where the tight end had 56 yards on three receptions, however, in terms of catches, Helm reeled in four passes twice, in a win over Miami and in the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl win against Temple.

Improving the offense wasn’t truly a priority for the Los Angeles Chargers coming into the 2019 NFL Draft as the team only selected two players on the offensive side of the ball.

In the Third Round the Chargers selected offensive tackle, Trey Pipkins from Sioux Falls and in the Firth Round, the pick was Easton Stick, a quarterback from North Dakota State.

Daniel Helm becomes the third Blue Devil to sign with a team as an undrafted free agent, joining Joe Giles-Harris and T.J. Rahming, in addition to Duke’s lone draft pick, Daniel Jones.
