Duke Football: New York Giants select Daniel Jones with No. 6 overall pick

The New York Giants selected Duke Football quarterback Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The rumors were true and now the, former, Duke Football quarterback, Daniel Jones, was selected by the New York Giants with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Being the No. 6 overall pick, Daniel Jones became the highest Duke Football player that has been drafted since 1987.

Jones was the second quarterback selected on Thursday night, behind Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray who went No. 1 overall to the Arizona Cardinals.

The Charlotte, North Carolina native also was the second offensive player taken behind Murray as the San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers all selected defensive players with its first round picks.

As a three year starter, Jones completed 59.9% of his passes for a total of 8,201 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions. Jones also rushed for 17 touchdowns in his three year career.

While the Giants seems to be a team in transition, the teams management loved the connection Jones had with current quarterback Eli Manning, who was also coached by David Cutcliffe while Manning was at Ole Miss.

Daniel Jones was named the MVP of the Reese’s Senior Bowl after leading the North to a come from behind win by completing 8-of-11 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown, including one rushing touchdown.

In his final season at Duke, completed 60.5% of his passes for a total of 2,674 yards, 22 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while playing in only 11 games after missing just two games with a broken collarbone.

Jones’ best game came in the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl where he led Duke to a 56-27 win over Temple and completed 30-of-41 passes for 423 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions, in addition to rushing for a touchdown.

Daniel Jones will have a year to sit and learn under veteran Eli Manning, and could potentially be the starting quarterback of the New York Giants next season once Manning’s contract is up.
